These shells, endemic to New Zealand are often known by the Maori name ‘Paua’. The usually have rough exteriors (backs) and in these shells, the roughness is ground off to reveal the wonderful natural vivid blue/green mother of pearl.
The shell animal is eaten (like US abalone steaks) and the shell material is often crafted into all types of jewellery, etc.
